The game

Trans-Am, forty years on

Mad Mustang is a love letter to Trans-Am, the 1983 ZX Spectrum game where you drove a car across America with the law on your tail. Same idea, rebuilt as pixel art: you pick a continent, a run, and a car, then drive it across a full-size map while enemy vehicles try to put you into the scenery.

Fuel burns the whole time. Cities have gas stations. The engine runs hot if you lean on it. Every hit costs you paint, and eventually the car.

Rescued

Save the Hostages

Ten pickups scattered across the map, and villains hunting you the whole way. Get to them first.

06
Eliminated

Get the Villains

You are the one doing the hunting now. Six targets, and they do not want to be caught.

10
Robbed

Rob the Banks

Ten banks, and every police car on the continent taking it personally.

The garage

Six cars, none of them polite

Every car is recolourable and takes decals. Speed multiplies top speed, armour divides the damage you take, mass resists being shoved, and size scales both the sprite and what it can hit.

Handling figures are multipliers against the baseline car.

On the road

What's in the cabin

Four continents

The United States, Europe, Russia and China, each a full map with named cities, gas stations and its own weather. Drive far enough north and the ground turns to snow.

Fuel and heat

The gauge drains as you drive and the temperature climbs when you push. Cities carry gas stations; running dry in open country ends the run.

EMP charges

Pick them up in the field and fire one off to kill every engine around you. The only way out of a bad pile-up.

Radar and minimap

A sweep showing what is closing on you, and a map of where the pickups and stations are. Both live on the HUD.

Tilt steeringiOS

Steer by tilting the phone instead of using the on-screen controls. Motion data is read on the device and never leaves it.

In-game radioiOS

Play your own music library through the car radio while you drive, controlled from the pause screen.

Leaderboards

High scores go to Game Center on iOS and Play Games on Android, with a local top-20 kept on the device either way.

Four difficulties

From three enemies on Easy to ten on Insane, which also drive faster, turn harder and give you less grace before they engage.

Mad Mustang Pro

  • All three run types
  • All four difficulty levels
